To become scientifically literate, or to understand how science works children need all the
skills of science investigation. Traditionally science investigations in schools have been in the
form of sets of steps which are followed much like using a recipe. Problem solving ability is a
critical part of any child’s education and giving children opportunities to suggest how they
would solve a scientific problem or set up an investigation gives practice with this skill.
Young children are enthusiastic to contribute to planning sessions and should be encouraged
to do so. These books allow for this to happen with the additional aim of maintaining and
furthering- rather than stifling- the curiosity they bring with them to school.
School science for young children should be fun! These books offer children the
chance to enjoy themselves using a wide variety of equipment in a range of different ways
and in different contexts. Instilling children with an enjoyment of science early goes a long
way towards shaping attitudes that will enrich their science learning experiences for many
years to come.
